Ashlawn, the Sargent-Gower Home

Ashlawn, was built between 1835 and 1845 from the same set of plans created by William Haskell Sargent and used for the Simmons home, Wyer G. Sargent’s home and the Sargent House.  It was owned by Lucius Bolles and Mary Ann Byard Sargent who arrived there as newlyweds. Their three children, Lucia, Rodolph and Lydia, were born there.  An ell and carriage-house were added and, later, the configuration of the main house was changed when the central chimney was removed to make way for a wider staircase.  In 1911, when her mother died, Lydia Gower inherited the property and in 1912 she gave the carriage house and land to her daughter Grace who converted it to a residence she called the Quarter Deck.¹
