The Condon Restaurant on Caterpillar Hill
In the 1950s Grace and Jay Condon had a restaurant at the top of Caterpillar Hill. They had a varied menu but the most popular item was their ice cream. Campers and counselors would walk up the hill from summer camps Robin Hood and Four Winds on Walker’s Pond as would the summer staff from Herrick’s because it was a great way to enjoy the company of their friends, the food, the view and the ice cream
In addition to her work in the restaurant Grace Gray Condon was also a much loved teacher who taught English in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 in the Sedgwick Elementary school.
Grace’s brother Ray Gray started an ice cream business in Brooksville and had an ice cream parlor there. Sylvia Wardwell and Velma Brown believe this is the original ice cream recipe used at Condon’s store but a test batch didn’t taste as good as the original.
